Abstract
Metabolic syndrome is a global health concern associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes. Moringa oleifera, a widely studied medicinal plant, has shown potential in improving metabolic syndrome risk factors. This review article critically evaluates current research on the effects of Moringa oleifera supplementation on metabolic syndrome risk factors in both human and animal studies. Although direct human studies examining the effect of Moringa oleifera on metabolic syndrome are limited, in-depth investigations into individual components of the syndrome provide valuable insights. Human studies exploring the impact of Moringa oleifera on specific risk factors, such as blood pressure and glycemic control, have shown promising outcomes. However, the results are not without contradictions, necessitating further investigation. Animal studies, on the other hand, have provided a wealth of evidence supporting the potential benefits of Moringa oleifera in reducing fasting glucose levels, improving lipid profiles, and combatting obesity. Mechanisms of action include antioxidant properties, enzyme modulation, and gut microbiota regulation. Although human evidence remains limited, Moringa oleifera holds promise as a natural remedy for addressing metabolic syndrome. Further research is required to establish optimal dosages and long-term effects.
